The airport lighting system at the Menzel Ledjmet Est (MLE) Airstrip was engineered by Signalight.
Located in the Berkine Basin of the Ouargla Province, the Aéroport Menzel Ledjmet Est (MLE Airstrip) functions as a specialized aviation hub for Algeria’s energy sector. Situated in a remote desert environment, it provides a vital logistics link between the industrial installations in the Sahara and major urban or administrative centers.
Technical implementation
- Precision engineering: Signalight designed the system to meet the specific safety requirements of a private industrial airfield, ensuring clear visibility for night operations and during low-visibility desert conditions (such as sandstorms).
- Durability: The equipment is built to withstand the extreme temperature fluctuations and corrosive environmental factors typical of the Berkine Basin in the Sahara Desert.
- System components:
- Runway edge lights for defining the takeoff and landing boundaries.
- Threshold lighting to indicate the start of the landing area.
- APAPI (Abbreviated Precision Approach Path Indicator): unlike a standard PAPI (which uses four light units), the APAPI system consists of only two units. This setup is ideal for airfields serving smaller aircraft or those where space and simplified maintenance are priorities, while still providing pilots with critical visual slope guidance during landing.
- Taxiway edge lighting: These lights delineate the paths between the runway and the apron/hangar areas. At MLE, these are vital for preventing “runway excursions” and ensuring safe ground movement of aircraft in the pitch-black conditions of the Sahara.
- Aviation windsock (Illuminated): Signalight provided a standard-compliant windsock, that allows pilots to immediately determine wind direction and approximate speed during both day and night operations, which is essential for safe takeoffs in a desert environment prone to sudden wind shifts.
- Controller V4: is an electrical cabinet housing all components necessary to power, protect, control, and monitor the airfield lighting system, specifically configured for MLE Airport.
- Console Controller: the system can be controlled remotely from a V4 Console Controller connected to the V4 Controller via cable.
- Compliance: The system is designed according to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards and FAA regulations, ensuring that private energy sector flights can operate with the same safety protocols as commercial aviation.
This lighting infrastructure is a critical component of the field’s 24/7 operational capability, allowing for continuous logistics and emergency medical evacuation support.
